What's changing in 2026

In January 2026, the UK’s old landline phone system will be switched off. All phone services will move to digital connections.

Who this affects

This change could affect older people who use landlines and don’t have broadband. It may also affect those who use telecare devices, like fall alarms.

Local councils and phone companies are working together to help people get ready. But some people may not know about the change - especially if their device wasn’t given to them by the council.

Most devices should still work, but they may stop working during a power cut. It’s important to have a backup plan.

Scammers may try to trick people during this change. Be careful.

What you need to do

BT and Virgin Media are asking telecare users to contact their phone company. The Local Government Association has made a toolkit to help raise awareness.
